Liberty Kids Choir started with the help of Sendai Singer songwriter, Kaori Omiya for children from age 3 to 12. They gather bi-weekly at a local community center, to enjoy games and learning songs and music together. This space creates an opportunity for ICC staff to invest long term in the next generation. The children performed with Kaori Omiya at the Gospel festivals in Sendai and in Ishinomaki.
Supporting afterschool activities at junior highs & Gospel Music Lessons: Another avenue of LMP is encouraging students who want to do music after school. Currently, we are supporting violin, guitar, bass, drums, and ukulele classes in after school clubs. Also a major part of those times is teaching Black Gospel. Two years after the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami, there were still roughly 30,000 people living in temporary housing in Ishinomaki and the surrounding areas. Through relationships and connections with several temporary housing units, ICC is able to regularly visit the local residents with various events and activities. Once a month, ICC helps run a bonsai workshop for temporary housing residents in the temporary housing meeting center.
